Chronology and typology of
narghile regulators marketed from 1946 to 1977

A narguile regulator is generally used in professional diving and rarely in recreational diving. It allows for underwater work without the weight and bulk of a scuba tank, thus offering greater freedom of movement. The diver wears the dual-hose narguile regulator using a harness. Compressed air is supplied at medium pressure (approximately 10 bar) via a long hose approximately 30 meters long called a glenoid. The entire system is connected at the surface to a medium-pressure compressor or a high-pressure air supply, expanded to medium pressure via a first stage.

In 1943, among the three Air Liquide regulator prototypes, one was designed in a narguile version. This is the one visible in the photograph below, which is the only one known to date. This model is the forerunner of the hookahs developed by LA SPIROTECHNIQUE, which were marketed until 1977, when the brand abandoned its professional division.

In total, three models of double-hose narguile were marketed between 1946 and 1978.

As mentioned on the CG45 page, the narguile version was manufactured occasionally and only on demand until 1955. Its body is identical to that of the yoke version, except that the first-stage mechanism is removed and replaced by a plug on the membrane side, while the yoke is replaced by a connector for the low-pressure hose.

In 1955 and 1956, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE produced a final series of CG45s, probably limited to 1,000 units, exclusively in the narguile version. I named this variant the late narguile version of the CG45 regulator.

The CG45/MISTRAL narguile, launched in 1957, retains the characteristics of the CG45 but adopts a US DIVERS type body, recognizable by its medium pressure (MP) connector inclined at 30° in relation to the housing. It is equipped with a MISTRAL manufacturer's label and will remain marketed until 1964.

The MISTRAL narguile, spelled with a U, was marketed between 1965 and 1967. Its production was limited to a small series of approximately 500 units, according to my estimates. The highest serial number found to date is 416, and from 1968 onward, its name was spelled with an H.

This model thus introduced several technical improvements, facilitating its maintenance and increasing diver safety.

In 1968, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE changed the spelling of the MISTRAL narguile, which was now written with an H (NARGHILÉ). This model remained on the market until 1977, when, faced with a serious financial crisis, the brand decided to abandon its professional branch.

The manufacturer's label, made of aluminum, quickly electrolyzes in contact with the marine environment, which explains why it is rare to find one in good condition today.

In total, fewer than 3,000 MISTRAL narguile were produced, or approximately 300 per year, making it a relatively rare regulator, especially in perfect condition.
