GENERATION III
The renaissance
1983-1986
The era of Renewal or the advent of plastic

In 1983, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE introduced the XL (eXtra Light) composite plastic second stage.

A true revolution in second stage design came straight from the USA with the US firm DIVERS. Lighter and more economical, plastic reduced the high production costs associated with the robust but expensive metal housings of the SERIES models.

A major technical change accompanied this evolution: the XL second stage allowed a Medium Pressure (MP) of 9.2 bar, compared to 7.5 to 8.4 bar for metal housings. This increase improved the breathing performance of future regulators.

Thanks to this innovation, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE could finally compete with SCUBAPRO, which had already been using plastic for several years. This transition marked the transition from SERIES regulators to the SUPRA generation and led to a reorganization of the already complex catalog.

This is how we see the appearance of SERIES models equipped with the XL housing, such as the SERIES 25, the SERIES PRO and the SERIES EXPLORER. At the same time, new regulators are introduced, notably the CLUB XL in 1983 and the AQUALUNG in 1986.

SPIRO PRO SECOND GENERATION
1984
Spiro Pro-2de version

In 1984, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE replaced the neoprene HP valve, deemed too fragile, with a Teflon valve on the PRO SERIES. To prevent this change from harming the model's image, the brand temporarily added the PRO RT (T for Teflon) label to its regulators.

No other changes were made that year. The diaphragm nut remained identical to the 1983 version: it was removed with an Allen wrench on the oil-bath version and with a large flathead screwdriver on the standard version.

SPIRO PRO THIRD GENERATION
1985
Spiro Pro-3e version

In July 1985, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE expanded the PRO SERIES range by offering six distinct versions. Four of them retained the metal second stage from the 1984 models, while two new versions adopted the XL housing: the PRO XL and the PRO XL S.

Each version was available with a yoke mount (with a French or international HP seat) or DIN mounting. In addition, the XL models were available with a yellow or black cover.

In addition, several technical developments were made. The first-stage HP seat, previously integrated into the body and held in place by a clip, was now removable. The diaphragm nut was also redesigned: it was now opened with a hook wrench for the oil-bath version and an Allen wrench for the standard version.

25 SERIES THIRD GENERATION
1984-1985
Série 25-3e version

The arrival of the XL housing and the EXPLORER regulator the previous year led to an evolution of the 25 SERIES in 1984.

The 25/10, 25/20, and 25/30 designations were eliminated to simplify the nomenclature, making way for two distinct versions:

• 25 SERIES: equipped with a metal second stage, available in a yoke version (F or I seat) and DIN.

• 25 XL SERIES: equipped with a plastic second stage, also available in a yoke version (F or I seat) and DIN.

CLUB 2, CLUB 2 XL, CLUB 3
1984-1985
Club 2 & 3

In October 1984, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE launched the CLUB 2 and CLUB 2 XL regulators, intended to replace the SPIRO CLUB, released in 1980. A few months later, in April 1985, a new version, the CLUB 3, was released to succeed the CLUB 2.

These models were available in three versions:

• CLUB 2: equipped with an all-metal second stage with a Venturi adjustment knob.

• CLUB 2 XL: equipped with an XL plastic second stage.

• CLUB 3: incorporating a metal second stage, but without an adjustment knob, and a black plastic cover.

All these regulators are equipped with an unbalanced piston first stage, which over the years became a staple in diving clubs. Today, it is known under the name CALYPSO at AQUALUNG.

SPIRO PRO FOURTH GENERATION
1986
Spiro Pro-4e version

In 1986, the PRO SERIES with its all-metal second stage was only marketed in its R (adjustable) version. Its metal cover was replaced by a black plastic model, similar to that of the XL.

The version without LP valve lift-off adjustment was only available with the XL second stage.

The XL models, however, remained unchanged.

AQUALUNG R & XL
1986-1995
Aqualung R & XL

The AQUALUNG is a balanced piston regulator with a design very similar to that of the SCUBAPRO MK10. Reliable and robust, it did not, however, achieve the same success as its competitor. It features two high-pressure (HP) ports and four medium-pressure (MP) ports mounted on a turret.

Launched in March 1986, it was offered in two versions: one with an XL second stage and the other with a metal model (AQUALUNG R). The latter incorporated a sensitivity device and a black plastic cover. From 1987 onwards, only the XL version remained available.

In 1991, alongside the release of the Club 1991, a new cover was introduced for the AQUALUNG regulator's XL housing.
