GENERATION IV
1987-2002
Generation SUPRA

In 1987, in response to a request from the French Navy, LA SPIROTECHNIQUE developed a balanced diaphragm first stage that was revolutionary for the time: the SUPRA.

In 1988, this regulator evolved into a second version with a more sophisticated design, featuring a male HP/yoke seat instead of a female one as on the initial model. This iconic first stage was used for 15 years with various second stages, including the XL (with several cover variations), the MICRA, and the XR2.

In 1998, probably following the death of Commander Cousteau, the SUPRA was renamed COUSTEAU, a name it retained until 2002. It was then replaced in 2003 by the first model in the LEGEND range.

The AQUALUNG, for its part, underwent a modification in 1996 with an oil-bath version, the PIONEER. This first piston stage, exceptional in my eyes, saw its marketing stopped in 1999 due to the democratization of NITROX, the oil being incompatible with a mixture of air enriched with oxygen.

SUPRA XL FIRST GENERATION
1987
SUPRA XL 1ere version

The first SUPRA model was launched in April 1987. It is a balanced diaphragm regulator with two HP outlets and four MP outlets. Produced in only a few thousand units, it is now a rare item. It differs from the second version by a more angular design and a HP seat of the yoke in female configuration.

CLUB 4 XL
1986-1990
CLUB 4XL

In 1986, the CLUB 4 XL was launched as the successor to the CLUB 3 XL. It featured a new unbalanced piston first stage with one HP port and four MP ports. Robust and easy to maintain, this regulator successfully established itself as a competitor to SCUBAPRO's MK2 R190 for diving club equipment.

CLUB XL 1991
1991-1993
CLUB XL 1991

In 1991, a new hood was introduced for the second stage of the CLUB 4 XL, eliminating a push button and its spring. However, this system proved impractical for purging, especially when wearing gloves, and was quickly abandoned.

AQUALUNG 1991

In 1991, alongside the launch of the new CLUB 4 XL, the AQUALUNG was also equipped with a new hood that eliminated the spring-activated purge button.

However, as with the CLUB 91, this system proved impractical for purging, especially when wearing gloves, and was quickly abandoned.

SUPRA XL SECOND GENERATION
1988-1995
SUPRA XL 2de version

In 1988, a new version of the SUPRA was released, with a more ergonomic design and a male HP seat at the bracket/DIN connection. Apart from these developments, its technical characteristics remain identical to those of the previous model.

SUPRA ARTIC
1989-1995
SUPRA ARTIC

In 1989, the first version of the ARTIC was launched to meet the needs of cold-water divers. The SUPRA first stage was equipped with an oil-bath chamber, but without an adjustment screw for the MP.

The XL housing, on the other hand, was equipped with metal fins serving as a heat exchanger, and the MP expansion point was moved to the opposite end of the housing so that the air was heated by the diver's exhalation.

In 1991, an MP adjustment screw was added to the first stage, as the medium pressure tended to increase in the oil bath without a clear explanation. The white, snowflake-shaped second-stage cover completes this model designed for cold environments.

SUPRA MICRA
1995-1997
SUPRA MICRA

The MICRA regulator combines a classic SUPRA first stage with a very compact plastic second stage, designed by the American manufacturer US DIVER. Ideal for children's diving, it was withdrawn from the European market at the end of 1997, as it did not meet the new European standards introduced that year.

SUPRA XR2
1996-1997
SUPRA XR2

In 1996, the XR2 second stage was launched to replace the XL housing. Its compact design is distinguished by the possibility of mounting the hose on either the left or the right. Initially offered with a blue cover (and optionally yellow, green or pink), it evolved in 1998 with the XR2 PERFORMA version. This new version, identifiable by its gray cover, incorporates an improved Venturi effect lever as well as a new sensitivity adjustment screw.

SUPRA XR2 CRYO
SUPRA XR2 CRYO
1997

The SUPRA XR2-CRYO is a brilliant successor to the ARTIC. Featuring an oil-free dry chamber developed by British manufacturer APEKS, it is compatible with NITROX. Its second stage incorporates metal fins that act as a heat exchanger.

PIONEER
PIONNEER
1996-1999

In 1996, SPIROTECHNIQUE launched the PIONEER, which, to my knowledge, is the only balanced piston regulator with an oil bath. Designed for cold or dirty water, it succeeded the AQUALUNG. Despite its excellent performance, it did not survive the widespread adoption of NITROX and unfortunately saw its production ceased in 1999.

In 1998, probably following the death of Captain Cousteau, the AQUALUNG brand decided to group under a single name all the products manufactured by LA SPIROTECHNIQUE, US DIVERS, TECHNISUB, and SEA QUEST. From then on, although LA SPIROTECHNIQUE still exists, its products are marketed under the AQUALUNG banner.

It's the end of an era... and also of my collection, as I chose not to include these regulators. You will therefore not find models like the TITAN, KRONOS, CALYPSO, LEGEND, or LEGEND 2 on this site.

However, we can already identify a fourth generation, the LEGEND, which appeared in 2003, as well as a transition period between 1998 and 2002, during which AQUALUNG established itself in France and Europe.

I hope my website has provided you with relevant information about the history of Spirotechnique brand regulators.

See you soon,

Luca
